About This Item

London: J. Madden and Co., 1844 xvi, 492pp; viii, 447pp, uniformly bound in polished calf, bindings tight, complete with the two frontis-pieces [lacking one tissue guard] and the folding map [edge crease is reinforced on the back side, where it attaches to the book, otherwise in Very Good Condition]. Both books bear the gilt stamp on the front and back covers for the Society of Writers to Her Majesty's Signet. The Society dates back to the 15th century, and the officers were authorized to produce royal manuscripts with the King of Scotland's seal, The Signet. From the personal collection of Dr. Brooks Ryder (1918-1995), graduate of Harvard College, Harvard School of Public Health, and Tufts Medical School. Known for his Public Health expertise overseas, throughout East Africa and Indonesia. The Covers are in Fair Condition, as the spines are flaking, peeling and lacking sections, the covers are still attached. The interiors of the books are in Very Good Condition, with an identification label inside the front covers. NO OTHER LABELS, INSCRIPTIONS, NOR MARKINGS. Vol. II has small corner damp mark on the first three leaves, not affecting the text, lacks the spine labels [one laid-in].
