London: George Routledge & Sons, Ltd, 1928. Hardcover. Very good. Abbe Huc (1813-60), a French Catholic priest, Lazarite missionary, and traveler, became famous for his accounts of Qing-era China, Mongolia, and Tibet, which was largely unknown at the time. He and his companion Joseph Gabet (1808-53) were the first Europeans to reach Lhasa since Thomas Manning in 1812. Translated by William Hazlitt. Edited with an introduction by Professor Paul Pelliot. Issued as part of The Broadway Travellers series. Octavo, two volumes: 387 p. + 406 p. with a folding map. Original red cloth bindings, with gilt titles. A very good set.
