About This Item

New York: A. L. Chatterton & Co., 1885. Hardcover. Good. Second Edition. Brick-colored cloth with gilt stamped spine; boards with blind-stamped design. Boards are a bit worn and soiled. Inner hinges good. Contemporary, private medical library bookplate on front pastedown, else unmarked and generally clean. 10-page bibliography. Index. Errata on last page. 377, [1] pages. A treatise on the breast, its diseases, and surgical treatments. First issued in 1877, this revised second edition of 1885 incorporated new knowledge of physiological and pathological histology. The author, Dr. Homer Irvin Ostrom (1852-1925), was for more than 40 years a prominent surgeon in New York City. He graduated in 1873 from the New York City Homeopathic Medical College and went on to serve as the senior surgeon at the Metropolitan Hospital, as staff surgeon at the Hahnemann Hospital, and for a few years operated a private sanitorium in the city. He was the son of Orange County's first homeopathic surgeon, Dr. Joshua Ward Ostrom. Bookplate of Drs. Stewart. ''Drs. Stewart,'' being an uncommon designation for a medical practice, are possibly the two brothers, well-known physicians in Chicago around the turn of the century, who opened the Finsen Institute in that city, having studied phototherapy with Dr. Niels Finsen: Wellington T. Stewart and H. John Stewart, who graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1893 and 1897, respectively.
