About This Item
New York: Burgess, Stringer, 1845. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good Condition. Publishers cloth worn and torn with significant loss at the head of the spine and top and bottom of rear board. Moderate foxing, heavy in spots, binding sound and clean otherwise. xii, 260pp with 4 plates of surgical tools at rear.
Dixon was a pupil of famous NY surgeon Valentine Mott - he was a relentless foe of what he viewed as quackery and pseudo-medicine. The work is divided in two parts, the first on syphilis, the second gonorrhea and other problems of the genitals. It is is the second part that Dixon famously discusses the benefits of circumcision, recommending it as a cure for masturbation as well as other more obvious ills (e.g. paraphimosis). Kellogg would famously take up this crusade 43 years later, adding cornflakes to the prescription. Size: Octavo (8vo). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Medicine & Health; Inventory No: 046835.
