About This Item

London: Heinemann, 1921. First Edition. Hard Cover. First UK Edition. Stott's Second Issue (printed in Great Britain by Billing and Sons, Ltd Guildford and Esher) rather than issued with the American sheets. No priority established. Publisher's dark green-blue cloth lettered in gilt to the spine and front board, with publisher's name in black at the base of the spine. Heinemann device in black to back board. 302 pages + 10 pages Heinemann's current fiction catalogue at the rear. The usual offsetting and toning to the front and rear end-papers otherwise a lovely near fine copy. No D/W although it is certainly good enough to take one. Includes Maugham's best short story 'Rain' which in its length and characterisation is more like a novella. It has been made into plays and movies. The role of Sadie - a prostitute - out to have a good time - has been played by none other than: Joan Crawford, Gloria Swanson and Rita Hayworth. It has often been chosen for anthologies and is prescribed reading for students attempting to master modern English literature. Photographs/scans available upon request.
