About This Item

New York:: D. & J. Sadlier & Co., , [1854].. publisher's cloth.. A near fine copy.. 12mo,. Civil War General John E. Mulford's copy, noting in pencil that this book was presented by its author while a (State) Prisoner of War at Fort McHenry, to (then) "Captain Jno E. Mulford, Jany 1862." An additional seven-line pencil note initialled by Mulford describes the conditions of Ives's confinement, noting that he was eventually discharged. There is no record of L. Silliman Ives, the author of this book, every having been incarcerated, although a Malcolm Ives was a prisoner at Fort McHenry. It is possible that Malcom Ives posed as the author of this book to Capt. Mulford, who was later appointed by Lincoln as Assistant Agent of [Prisoner] Exchange, stationed in Richmond, Virginia.
