About This Item
(Cape Town: Books of Africa, 1968). First edition. 4to; pictorial boards; endpaper map; pp. (l) + 206, incl. index; profusely illustrated, largely in full colour. Backstrip very slightly rubbed at head; trace of foxing to top edge. Very good condition. "This is a monumental work of the greatest historical and artistic value; and it could only have been accomplished by one whose devoted application and adventurous spirit took her to the natural habitat and environment of her subjects. Alone in her caravan for many years until her marriage, she travelled into the most primitive areas of Southern Africa to find her models at home. She brought with her a friendship and an understanding of tribal taboos that enabled her to discover and portray the intimate details of dress and behaviour in the most secret initiatory performances. From this have come to us details of great historical value, which would otherwise have been lost and forgotten." .
