Green cloth, gilt lettering on red title label on spine, 12 mo, 276 pp. Early rebinding with the original backstrip laid down, and with the woodcut plate showing deer hunting as a frontis with tissue guard. Lacking the second plate. . Important early account of Texas by A. A. Parker (1791-1893), New Hampshire lawyer and judge and son of a U.S. senator. Parker graduated from the University of Vermont in 1813, was editor of the New Hampshire Statesman in Concord, and "traveled through Texas just prior to the Texas Revolution. He spent a little over a month in Texas, visiting San Augustine, Nacogdoches, HallÕs Ferry on the Brazos, and Brazoria, among others. He gives particular attention to the land, noting the types of crops that could be grown, and also discusses various animals of Texas, including alligators, panthers, bears, deer, buffalo, and mustangs. In 1836, a new edition of this work was released, in which sections about the Midwest were removed and a 56 page ÒSketch of the Texian RevolutionÓ was added." UTSA. Basic Texas Books 159. Includes an extensive appendix with detailed accounts of Michigan, Illinois and Missouri, and a list of expenses incurred by the author on this trip. Book shows some scuffing to paper on front paste down where a bookplate has been removed. No marks in book, binding tight and pages clean. Covers show minor soiling and edge wear. Book condition VG.
