About This Item
1968, hardcover reprint edition (of a work first privately published in 1876; reprinted from a rare copy provided by a resident of Oklahoma City), Volume 39 in the publisher's Western Frontier Library Series, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, OK. Hardcover title, 165 pages. Historical vintage b&w photos / drawings throughout. This is another title in compact editions of classics of the American frontier. Beautifully published, these volumes are all formatted in size and appearance. Extremely well done. In this particular case, we have the story of a VIP group of military men who headed West for two months of hunting and fishing in what was termed then "a wonder land." "Paints a picture of the beauties of Yellowstone, its majestic falls, hot springs and geysers. Even more important to the party are the thrills of the hunt in this sportsman's paradise, from fighting trout to stampeding buffalo herds." The General tells of meeting mountain men, stagecoach drivers, and townsmen. Because of their prestige as a unit, the VIPs were feted here and there, most notably by General George A. Custer, who one year later would die at the Little Big Horn. Quite a narrative.
