1886-1887 Catalogue of Allen Academy, a co-ed "English, Classical, French and German Boarding and Day School" conducted by Ira Wilder Allen. Includes a list of instructors and their qualifications, a statement on the aims of the school, a description of both the classical course and the scientific course, and a list of fees and tuition. Notable is a section devoted to study-abroad opportunities in Europe during the summers of 1886 -1889, in Germany, Switzerland, England and Scotland, and Greece, respectively. Illustrations show the school building and its neighborhood.
Ira W. Allen (1827-1912) was a well-known educator. "For eighteen years he was head of the Allen Academy [in Chicago], which closed in 1892, when he retired. He was a graduate of Hamilton College, Clinton, N.Y. He founded the Union Christian College in Indiana, and at one time was head of Lake Forest University." (New York Times)
