First issue blue cloth decorated in gilt and black. [From the library of Eric Quayle, author of a biography and a bibliography of Ballantyne.]Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the front free endpaper: ''To C.A. Ballantyne from her affect. brother the author, Harrow 1884''. The recipient is the author's sister-in-law Christina Alice. After the word ''sister'' in the inscription a different hand has added the words ''-in-law''.Inner hinges cracked. Some damage, repaired, to bottom part of front free endpaper. Covers slightly marked. Spine slightly darkened. Small snags to head and tail of spine. Good. Very scarce.
