About This Item

Chatto & Windus, London., 1876. First edition. Octavo. Two volumes: pp [viii], 311; iv, 301. Mid-Twentieth Century binding by Rivière of three-quarter red morocco with raised bands, gilt decorated spines, gilt rules, cloth sides. Top edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. With the burgundy leather ex libris Beeleigh Abbey bookplate of W.A. Foyle on the front pastedown of each volume. The original cloth spines and cloth sides have been mounted on blanks at the rear. This novel explores the themes of 'destined spirits' and supernatural visions. A ship's captain changes course after seeing an apparition. Spine at head of spine of Vol. I a little scuffed at lower hinge. Still, a near-fine set.

Synopsis

For a moment the horror of the discovery turned me faint and giddy. In another instant I was kneeling by her chair. My arm was round her - her head lay on my shoulder. She was past speaking, past crying out: she trembled silently, and that was all. I said nothing. No words passed my lips, no tears came to my relief. I held her to me; and she let me hold her. The child, devouring its bread-and-butter at a little round table, stared at us. The boy, on his knees before the grate, mending the fire, stared at us. And the slow minutes lagged on; and the buzzing of a fly in a corner was the only sound in the room.
