About This Item

Lilly Library, Indiana University, Bloomington, first edition, 1990. Printed wrappers, 4to, 28 cm,. 138 pp, ills. To commemorate the two-hundred-and-fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Samuel Richardson's Pamela, we decided to mount an exhibition of British novels from Pamela to the present..... It is a suggestion to readers that they look beyond the well-known greats and enjoy discovering some of the good novels by secondary writers. .... To understand the background against which the great novels were written it is necessary to know the minor, and indeed the very minor, works. For that reason this exhibition includes a number of books there never is time to teach in the classroom but, nevertheless, form part of the long and rich history of the British novel." An excellent discursive survey of the novel in the two and a half centuries from 'Pamela', followed by an "Alphabetical List by Author and Title of the 521 Novels Discussed in the Catalog". Slightly fingermarked, otherwise Very Good.
