About This Item

This offering consists of Two Issues (Vol. II No. I, January 1882) and Vol. V, No. II, April 1888) of 'The New England Bibliopolist: containing the "Book Notices" in the Historical and Genealogical Register, Edited by John Ward Dean". The documents were part of a quarterly edition published in Boston and edited by John Ward Dean. Since the word "bibliopolist" is often defined as "a dealer in secondhand books (especially rare or curious books]", what these documents are essentially are a book dealer's catalogue providing BOOK NOTICES, RECENT PUBLICATIONS, and NOTES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS to its readership.

To better understand the contents of these issues, let us look at the contents of the 46 page April 1888 issue. They are:
• Pages 1-40, BOOK NOTICES – These are a series of book listings, taken from the Historical and Genealogical Register, containing detailed descriptions of the physical characteristics and contents of each book
• Pages 40 – 42, RECENT PUBLICATIONS – This is a 3-page listing of publications "presented to the New England Historic Genealogical Society to March 1, 1888", and indicating which of them may have been written or edited by a Society member. The descriptions are limited to the physical characteristics of each volume.
• Pages 43 – 46, NOTES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS – This section contains several short texts written by readers, a list of genealogies in preparation, the table of Contents for the April 1888 issue of The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, and a full-page advertisement, including testimonials, for The New England Historical and Genealogical Register.

Each issue is string-bound and measures approximately 6 ¼ x 9 ¾ inches. The 1882 issue contains 20 pages, some unopened, that are tanned but whose text is clear and easily read. The 1888 issue contains 46 pages, mostly unopened, that are tanned but whose text is clear and easily read. The overall condition of the two issues is good.

The illustrations accompanying this description show the front covers of each issue and a typical page from BOOK NOTICES, RECENT PUBLICATIONS, and NOTES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS.

About Pages For Sages

Pages For Sages has been in the business of buying and selling rare and used books, ephemera, and other unusual items for over forty years. We have long depended on book fairs, printed catalogs, auctions, and the like to support the business. Now, in our later years (ages 90 and 92) we are taking this step to display a catalog of inventory on the Biblio web site for your consideration. The number of our listings will grow as we continue the process of adding items from our inventory - please come back from time to time to find additional offerings.
