About This Item

NY, NY: The MacMillan Companuy, 1898. (1st American edition). Hardbound. FAIR. Published in New York by The Macmillan Company in 1898. This is the first appearance of James' renowned ghost story "The Turn of the Screw." One of only 2,250 copies, this is a first American edition, published either simultaneously with the British edition or one week later. This copy comes in its original maroon cloth with gilt lettering on the spine and gilt on the top edge of the pages. There are 393 pages in this volume, followed by three pages of advertisements for other Henry James works. The book has a solid unmarked text block with faintly age tanned pages with rough cut side and bottom edges. The binding is loose in the space ahead of the title page and at the rear hinge, ahead of the advertising pages. The maroon cloth covers have slightly curled corners, and light age soil. The spine covering is damaged with both the top and bottom edges frayed and diminished, age soiled and the gilt printing faded.
