About This Item

Tight, square, uncreased spine. Clean, unmarked interior has some toning. Some light to moderate shelf-wear to the covers, including a few small areas of rubbing, edge-wear, and some adhesive remainder to the front cover. Remainder mark to top edge. Translation of Le sang d'un poète and le testament d'Orphée. Translated by Carol Martin-Sperry. Hard-to-find Pelican featuring a George Klauber–designed cover that depicts a stylish and enigmatic mashup of hamsa, cinematically floating titles, and Cocteau's autograph. Klauber attended Pittsburgh's Carnegie Institute of Technology with Andy Warhol, where he was, according to Blake Gopnik, 'an older student who went on to launch Warhol into both his gay life and commercial career in New York.' He designed a number of Penguin covers and 'had an unbelievably filthy mouth,' as reported by his student at Pratt, Kelley Bell. The interior also boasts a dynamic design, with an alluring modernist title page, plenty of B&W photos by Sacha Masour and Picasso intimate Lucien Clergue, and pleasing use of Optima as a display face. 145 pp.
