About This Item
Boston, 1849. unbound. Two sworn depositions in a legible secretarial hand, detailing a violent incident on board the ship Harrisburg on a voyage between New Orleans and Boston -- a fight between the cook and the captain occasioned by a lack of coffee. 2 pages and 5 pages, 15.25 x 9.75 inches, Boston, October 9, 1849, each on lined paper bound at the top with red ribbon threaded through two brass-rimmed punch-holes and sealed with orange wax, with printed Commonwealth of Massachusetts notary forms affixed to the last pages. Slight chipping around the punch-holes on the five-page disposition; discoloration on the back of the last page -- still very good condition overall.<br/> <br/> From the testimony of a 17-year-old sailor: "...He said (the cook) 'By Jesus Christ, if you or any other man on board of the ship should undertake to put me in irons, I'll do--'I couldn't make out the rest of what he said; but he was flourishing a carving knife in his hand..."<br/> <br/>
