This book was dedicated by Booth Tarkington to his mother, who signed this copy on the dedication page. Elizabeth Booth Tarkington (1841-1909) died before her son was declared "America's most significant contemporary author" by Publisher's Weekly, but she is remembered as the one who kindled his interest in literature. His mother was featured in two of his novels, The Two Van Revels (1902) and Penrod and Sam (1916).

Synopsis

It was long ago in the days when men sighed when they fell in love; when people danced by candle and lamp, and did dance, too, instead of solemnly gliding about; in that mellow time so long ago, when the young were romantic and summer was roses and wine, old Carewe brought his lovely daughter home from the convent to wreck the hearts of the youth of Rouen.
