Rotterdam: Dirck Mullem, 1595. Second Edition. Hardcover (Half Leather). Very Good Condition. Old leather backed boards. Worn, hinges tender, chipped and bumped at edges and corners. Modest browning and foxing, a bit of damp staining at the end generally contained to the outer margin and gutter. Old note to the endpaper in Dutch referring to a biography of Joris by David Georgen. Set in gothic type with some notes in a roman typeface. Interesting use of Granjon's Civilite typeface for a few words in the captions for a diagram on 4C6. Dated 1551 but printed 1595 by Mullem in Rotterdam who, as related by P. Valkema Blouw in "Printers to the 'arch-heretic' David Joris" printed a number of his works at the end of the 16th century. The first Mullem edition (and second edition overall) was 1584 and this has been variously described at the Third edition or, more accurately I think, the second printing of the second edition. Two of the three remarkable full page engravings are signed I.R.W. by Hieronymous Wierix. Wierix was born in 1553 - this being one of the clues that led to the realization that the date on the title page was an obfuscation to prevent charges of heresy - the use of Civilité type is another. It was first used in 1558. 8 cuts in the text of mystical diagrams and figures. Joris, 1501-1556 was an influential Anabaptist mystic who was posthumously convicted of heresy, dug up, and burnt with his publications and a portrait in 1559. Size: Folio. Quantity Available: 1.
