About This Item

Witham, Essex, [England]: Typed Letter Signed, 1967. Letter Matted & Framed with a B&W Photo of Sayers. Very Good +. Typed Letter SIGNED by Dorothy Sayers dated April 16, 1967, 1-page (8" x 10"; previously folded), 8vo, on personal letterhead stationery to Mr. Stewart Dick, of Barnes, N.W. Handsomely framed, matted with a photo of Sayers, and glazed (19 1/2" x 17").

The author expresses her thanks to Mr. Dick for his flattering remarks about her use of Scottish details in her Peter Wimsey detective-mystery series. Sayers gives informative details about how she had borrowed painterly details used by her character "Ferguson" from a very good female fartist friend--now deceased. Dorothy Sayers (1893-1957) was one of the finest mystery writers of the 20th century. She was also a poet, playwright, essayist, literary critic, translator (most notably of The Divine Comedy), and Christian humanist with a profound knowledge of classical and modern languages.

She is best known for her mysteries set between the First and Second World Wars that feature English aristocrat and amateur sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey. However, Sayers herself considered her translation of Dante's Divine Comedy to be her best work. She is also known for her plays, literary criticism, and essays.

Framed, glazed, and matted with a photograph of Dorothy Sayers and a Typed Letter with Exceptional Content SIGNED by the famous mystery writer explaining how she used details in her Peter Wimsey mysteries that she had drawn from local color which she had experienced during excursions into Scotland or borrowed from a very close friend who was an artist.

Letter in Very Good Plus condition, though there is a small 1" light tan [tape?] stain in the upper right of the TLS; a slightly noticeable verical fold, and a few minor smudges. Signed "Dorothy Sayers" in a clear pen flourish.

Attractively matted and framed letter and photograph of the famous mystery writer! Extra Shipping charges may be necessary.
