About This Item

[Chicago, 1941.] A.L.S. 1½ pages. Near Fine.

Intriguing letter by Dawes to George H. Pepper describing the planning of the Allied Armies in France during the First World War. Dawes continues on this theme and concludes: "The story of Cowens and myself being reconciled at lunch is pure invention, as is also the anecdote about my impatience at some proposed adjournment of an imaginary meeting." This may possibly reference Dawes appearance before the Senate's hearing on war expenditures, post-war in 1921, in which Dawes burst out: "Hell and Maria, we weren't trying to keep a set of books over there, we were trying to win a war!" He was later known as "Hell and Maria Dawes" (Wikipedia)
