Amsterdam, Netherlands, September 1, 1950., 1950.. Fine. - Over 75 words typed on his personal 8-1/8 inch high by 5-3/4 inch wide creamy white stationery with his name "Mr. Arn. J. d'Ailly" printed at top left. In his letter, addressed to the President of the Saint Nicholas Society in New York William M. Clearwater, d'Ailly informs him that his "eldest son, aged 18, will leave to-morrow for the United States, where he got a scholarship for Groton-School for the year 1950-1951." He goes on to say that he gave his son Clearwater's contact information and that of the "Saint Nicholas Society, in case he might need any advice from friends." Signed "AJD" with his initials. Folded for mailing with a tiny spot of foxing to the right edge and a minor spot of soiling to the left. Near fine.

The mayor of Amsterdam in the Netherlands from 1946 to 1956, Arnold Jan d'Ailly (1902-1967) was nicknamed "the flying mayor" as he promoted trade by flying to many foreign cities.
