About This Item
New York, 1945. unbound. very good. Humorous short letter, signed, "George." 4to. 1 page, personal letterhead, 410 Park Avenue, to Garson Kanin and his wife Ruth Gordon, undated, but most definitely after the death of Kaufman's wife (Beatrice) on October 6th 1945, in full: "Dear Kanins: Can you skip two trips to the bathroom and thus find time to read this?" * At the time this letter was written Kaufman and the Kanins were collaborating on a production that would ultimately be titled "Born Yesterday". Upon Beatrice Kaufman's death on October 6th 1945, the Kanins moved into George's apartment on 410 Park Avenue - which more or less became their office. They made this decision while attending Beatrice's funeral and hearing a grief-stricken Kaufman telling Russell Crouse: "I'm finished. Through. I'll never write again." The letter was probably an attempt at humor by Kauffman who was known as a practical joker. 'Born Yesterday' opened on Broadway on February 4th 1946 at the Lyceum Theater in New York City. Fine condition.

American playwright, theater producer, and director, who also wrote political satire and several musicals for the Marx Brothers.
