Brown cloth over boards; covers and spine decorated with gilt, red and black pointelle, acanthus and tendril designs; gilt titles on spine; gilt top edge; end papers in brown and black with slightly raised floral pattern; two-color title page and chapter heads; decorative drop-cap initials and chapter head and tail pieces. Bright, clean covers and spine; some rubbing wear at cover fore corners and spine ends; boards just exposed at front cover fore corners; 1/8 strip of cloth lacking at spine head; tightly bound; gift inscription on half title in fine hand dated January 1884; fairly heavy foxing on few prelim and terminal leaves; occasional moderate foxing interior.
