About This Item

Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Doran & Company , 1932. Hardcover. VG+/Good-. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Hardcover with dust jacket. Navy blue boards with gilt on front and spine. DJ price of $2.00 still present on front flap. No handwriting or bookplates noted in book. Foxing noted, with the worst being end pages and title page. When we purchased this book in the late 1970s we discovered a letter tucked inside the pages. The letter is dated 1926 but it preferences this book (showing a publication date of 1932) and calling this book a Memorial Edition. The letter reads as follows: "Dear Mr. Wister: I have sent you under separate cover a copy of the Memorial Edition of " Typhoon" by Joseph Conrad for which you were kind enough to write an appreciation. I hope that the appearance of the book pleases you. It has given us great pleasure to make this edition, and we are greatly indebted to you for your most interesting contribution. Very truly yours, Russell Doubleday". The letter is addressed to Mr. Owen Wister, 913 Pine Street, Philadelphia Pennsylvania. This letter is on the company letterhead of Doubleday, Page & Company whereas this book is published underDoubleday, Doran & Company. This is rather unique copy as we found no references to a 1932 memorial edition of this title. Owen Wister was an American writer and historian, considered the "father" of western fiction. Russell Doubleday s an American author, editor and publisher and was the advertising manager (and eventually vice-president) for his brother's publishing firm. The dust jacket shows heavy sunning along spine and edges. Moderate chipping and edge tears also noted. Underside of dust jacket was repaired with small piece of cellophane tape. Cloth boards are clean with only very minor spine edge and corner bumps. Front gilt and bright, gilt on spine is faded. Book condition is very good plus in a good minus dust jacket. See photos.

Terms of Sale

Yesterday's Book Shop (Member IOBA)

Purchases will ship by US Media Mail or Priority Mail (if buyer selects) and higher priced items may have insured placed on the order and will typically ship within one business day. Additional postage may be required for multiple volume books or books weighing over 5 lbs., but only in unusual cases. Insurance is available upon request though we normally place insurance on any item of $75 or higher at no additional cost to the buyer. Non-US sales will ship by First Class International or Global Priority. Additional postage may be required for multiple volume books or books weighing over 4 lbs.

We always take extra care in packaging and shipping. Books are typically wrapped in packing paper or bubblewrap before packaged in a sturdt shipping box. All orders, even those shipped by US Media Mail, will be given a USPS tracking number which will be sent to the buyer so they will know when to expect arrival. Please let us know if there is a book with incorrect or missing photos. We recently moved the inventory to Biblio and a title or two may have had issues with the photos being transferred over.

Yesterday's Book shop is owned and operated by a disabled veteran. Due to my limitations, I often have to rely on speech-to-text software to list the books. If the description has typos ("and pages" instead of "end pages", pace downs instead of pastedowns, guilt instead of gilt, etc,) PLEASE let me know so I can correct the listing. The software spells words by phonetics and can make errors that I may not catch.

There is a 30 day money back guarantee if the book arrives damaged or is not as described. Please contact us prior if you have any issues with your purchases and we will make sure you are taken care of.

About Yesterday's Book Shop (Member IOBA)

Yesterday's Book Shop is an independent, family-owned establishment. The store first opened in 1966 under the name Collector's Corner and was located in Western Maryland. The Collector's Corner dealt mainly in books but also sold stamps and assorted ephemera. In 1975 the name was changed to Yesterday's Book Shop when the store only offered books and printed matter. In the early 2000s the brick and mortar store was closed and now we only sell online.

All of the book pictures were taken at the time the book was listed and we never use generic or stock photos in any listing. If you would like additional photos or information on any listing please let us know and we will be more than happy to comply.
