About This Item

Translated by Guddie Lawaetz. With an essay by Michael Salewski. First edition thus (originally published as U-Boot Krieg at Munich and Zurich in 1976). 4to. Boards. Pages unnumbered. Illustrated. Fine copy in dj.

The author was born in 1918. From an early age his artistic talents were recognized. When the War broke out he enlisted in the German Navy and served on mine sweepers, destroyers, and lastly submarines. On the latter he was provided with cameras and films and ordered to record what he experienced: "Every aspect, every detail counted, bore witness to the reality of war, for unless I captured it on film it was irretrievably gone." He was, of course, the author of Das Boot (1975) which came to be made into the memorable film of that title.
