It is probably true to say that, over the last decade, U2 have been one of the very few bands that have really advanced the cause of rock music as a valid form of popular culture, carrying the torch lit in the 1960s by the likes of Lennon and Hendrix. From their first album Boy in 1980 to Achtung Baby in 1991, U2 have gone through a sequence of changes that have run the gamut from the personally ambiguous to the politically obvious.Brought to life in the aftermath of the late seventies punk explosion they were, to quote Bono,'a group before we could play', something which has been central to their music ever since. It was as much their closeness as friends as any musical ambition which drew them together initially, a factor which engendered a distinct voice and direction of their own as they tackled the universal themes close to their hearts - faith, doubt, terrorism, political oppression, racism and the destruction of basic human rights. And yet as they espoused the creed of tolerance for one another, they also recognized that they had no magic answers to give as they wrestled with their own personal demons and irrational behaviour for which they earned their fair share of criticism. Ultimately, though, U2 have proved with phenomenal success that where there is wilful intelligence, a willingness to experiment and to pick up on new ideas, there is great rock music. The book looks at the band's creative output in a broader light, tracing the prevailing conditions which shaped their music at each stage and analysing some of the inherent contradictions and frictions which motivate their songwriting.Featuring exhaustive research and extensive interview material, the book will chronicle U2's journey to date (1993) in a musical, political and social context, and will consider the future, giving a wider vision of the work the band have done and what they have yet to do.For a band that's dangerous because it's honest, there's always more work to do.
