About This Item
Stockholm: Gedruckt in der Central-Druckerei, 1893. FIRST EDITION. With 4 plates, each containing numerous figures, plus accompanying index for each plate. Original printed wrappers, torn at joint and edges, author's presentation stamp on top wrapper; a clean copy. First edition of this fascinating monograph on the murids, or rats and mice (and similar species), particular to the country of Cameroon. Given the large number of species, Tullberg details his observations in a series of experiments, comparing the anatomy of various animals as well as certain social habits. Of particular interest is the explanation of their dental structure. The muridae is the largest family of mammals, and includes rats, mice, gerbils, and related animals, many of which reside in Cameroon.
Tullberg (1842-1920) was a Swedish zoologist who exercised a great influence on the subject in his native Sweden. Both a teacher (professor at the Zoological Institute in Uppsala) and a researcher, he contributed numerous publications over the years, which garnered him prizes from not only Swedish but foreign scientific societies.
