Jacket has several shallow chips and one 2-inch arrowhead-shaped chip at the head of spine (see photo). It also has the clipped corner and odd crescent-shaped edge hole on front flap that other sellers have mentioned. Price on jacket is $3.75. Book is in excellent condition except for a faded area on spine matching the large chip. Binding is tight, pages are clean and unmarked, may be unread. Stated first edition. . The book is a political novel that depicts Americans somewhere in Southeast Asia, and its publication caused a sensation in America and abroad. "Ugly American" became a pejorative term depicting American citizens as exhibiting loud, arrogant, demeaning, thoughtless, ignorant, and ethnocentric behavior, especially as travellers or tourists in foreign countries. The book is the basis for a 1963 movie by the same name, starring Marlon Brando. A solid copy of the first printing. . 8vo 8" - 9" tall. I6 .
