Book is in excellent condition except for a faded area on spine matching the large chip. Binding is tight, pages are clean and unmarked, may be unread. Stated first edition. . The book is a political novel that depicts Americans somewhere in Southeast Asia, and its publication caused a sensation in America and abroad. "Ugly American" became a pejorative term depicting American citizens as exhibiting loud, arrogant, demeaning, thoughtless, ignorant, and ethnocentric behavior, especially as travellers or tourists in foreign countries.
