About This Item

New York, NY: McGraw Hill Book Company, 1962 McGraw Hill Book Company, New York. 1962. Hardcover. Book Club Edition by DJ note and indentation on the rear board corner. Book is tight, square, but does have the names and dates of four readers on the FFFP. Book Condition: Good; bumping to lower front tip, head, and tail, shelfwear to board lower edges; light soiling to textblock edges. DJ: Fair; old scotch tape repairs to upper and lower edges of DJ and front flap fold; missing piece on top of front panel; closed tears. Green cloth over boards with black overlay on the spine with red and white lettering on the spine; African heads in gilt on the front board. 555 pp 8vo. In the beginning was Mau Mau. Now the indomitable white settlers of Kenya are faced with the more organized demand- Uhuru-freedom for the African, as a couple of Oxford educated Kikuya leaders to whom the UN listens and had better, and the ubiquitous threat of Congolese chaos repeating itself in the British colony. The first white man in Kenya's history is hanged for killing a black, an African politico instigates a Mau Mau resurgence. There are at least five variations on what it is that can happen to a head on being separated from its shoulders by a panga. There are lion hunts, romantic interludes, and a solution that would have the British resolve their problems by emulating the Portuguese in Angola. Ruark writes through gritted teeth, bites off the entire political spectrum of Africa, and spits out a rather limited novel that excites and enthralls. A clean presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket.
