First US printing. The third and final and best- known novel (although it stands alone) in the 'Fortunes of Robert Mahoney trilogy by this Australian author. The first two volumes had very modest sales and the UK publisher balked at this one - but when it appeared, it very quickly became a best seller in the US - the dust jacket announces a first printing of 80,000 copies - and it was hailed as a masterpiece and one of the greatest novels in the English language. Winner of the Australian Literature Society Gold Medal. 314 pp.
