About This Item

Modern Library New York, 1946 This notable Modern Library Giant edition includes the summing up by Judge Woolsey allowing the controversial novel to be published in the USA. The text block is stained at the top, as required for this edition, and it has a few signs of being read. The binding is firm, and has obviously been well protected by the jacket, which is well preserved and itself protected by a mylar sleeve. There is a former owner signature on the front endpaper, which is a minor irritation, so if that kind of thing bothers you don't buy this copy. With one's best forensic hat on it is obvious that in some early passages some annotations have been made in pencil. It is equally obvious that another somebody has erased these offending marks. I look on these pale ghosts as marks of experience rather than serious abuse. This is not an ex library copy, but it is an OLD copy. 1946 is a long time ago now, and Near Fine takes into consideration the age of the book. So much of this wonderful maze of a book still grips and fascinates; above all, it is moving, especially when the text is familiar because of more than one reading. The Molly Bloom solilloquy is an extraordinary example of creative fiction, and it is still shattering today. 'I put my arms around him yes and drew him down to me so he could feel my breasts all perfume yes and his heart was going like mad and yes I said yes I will Yes.' If that moves you, as it does me, then give this a read. It is unlike any other novel, and it has moments of great beauty. Language: eng. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine.

Synopsis

Ulysses is a modernist novel by James Joyce. It was first serialized in The Little Review from March 1918 to December 1920 and later published by Shakespeare and Company in 1922. Originally, Joyce conceived of Ulysses as a short story to be included in Dubliners , but decided instead to publish it as a long novel, situated as a sort of sequel to A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man , picking up Stephen Dedalus’s life over a year later. Ulysses takes place on a single day, June 16, 1904, in Dublin - now celebrated as Bloomsday annually. Within the massive text of 265,000 words (not so “short” anymore, eh?), divided into 18 episodes, Joyce radically shifts narrative style with each new episode, completely abandoning the previously accepted notions of plot, setting, and characters. The presentation of a fragmented reality through interior perception in Ulysses , often through stream-of-consciousness, is one of many reasons it is considered a paramount in Modernist literature.  Ulysses presents a series of parallels with Homer’s epic poem Odyssey (Ulysses is the Latinized name of Odysseus.) Not only can correspondences be drawn between the main characters of each text — Stephen Dedalus to Telemachus, Leopold Bloom to Odysseus, and Molly Bloom to Penelope, but each of the 18 episodes of Ulysses reflects an adventure from the Odyssey. In 1998, the American publishing firm Modern Library ranked Ulysses first on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. February 2022 will mark the centennial of the publishing of Ulysses , with auctions, sales, and celebrations by Joyce fans scheduled around the globe.
