About This Item

Strasbourg: Impr. de Veuve Berger-Levrault, 1869. First Edition. 12mo. [1-3] 4-119, [1 blank] pp. Publisher's cloth, spine modestly gilt-lettered. Frontispiece albumen photograph portrait of Monnier evenly faded. Mild fading to black cloth, small tear near heel of spine, very good.

A memorial and tribute to Isabelle née André Monnier, a native of Paris. The bulk of this book gathers writings by Monnier which appeared anonymously in 1867, two years before her death in 1869, published as Hors De L'Abîme Histoire D'une Vie De Femme. The latter approximately translates as Out of the Abyss, A Story of a Woman's Life.

From page 39:

It is interesting to note, Monnier's book was reprinted some thirty-five plus years later in 1904.

Quite scarce. The mounted albumen frontispiece photograph of young Isabelle Monnier shows a full-length portrait as she poses, leaning upon an ornately-carved chair.

OCLC, various accessions: 4 records via Bibliotheque Nationale de France, 2 copies in Switzerland, 1 at Amherst.
