Illustrated throughout with engravings by Angas, Danby, Wolf, Zwecker, etc, etc. Signed and inscribed by the Publisher on the FFEP. Bound in 3/4 leather with matching pebbled brown cloth with gilt titles present to the spine. Boards have wear present to the extremities of the boards (boards are scuffed and worn). Foxing present. Text is free of marks. Binding tight and solid. John George Wood (1827-1889) , who wrote numerous popular science works. He became particularly known for his zoological "black boards" with colored chalk drawings on long sheets, which were very popular. Volume I is devoted to African tribes while Volume II is concerned with the aboriginal inhabitants of Australia, New Zealand, Pacific islands, Borneo, North, Central and South America, Siberia, India, and the Far East.
