About This Item
Smith, Elder & Co., London, 1897 VERY SCARCE especially in such a wonderful binding. An important and uncommon Sir Arthur Conan Doyle book, and for many collectors an essential part of their collection. Looking for a replacement to Sherlock Holmes after the author had killed him off in 1894, Doyle wrote this murder mystery in the dying years of the 19th century. Set in Napoleons era, it involves a Frenchman returning to his native land to join the Emperors ranks. Elegantly rebound in navy leather quarter binding, with gold titling to the spine, five raised bands, and hand marbled boards. Modern rebind is by Bristol Bookbinding, and this is an heirloom quality first edition for the serious Conan Doyle collector. It is elegant and beautiful, but most importantly it is utterly durable in this gorgeous binding. Language: eng Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng. 1st Edition..
