About This Item

Boston: John P Jewett and Company , 1852. First edition. Leather. Very Good. 9.5" by 6.5". None. A first edition, early printing of Harriet Beecher Stowe's anti-slavery novel. Originally published in two volumes, this is a one volume edition printed the same year as the first edition. To the title page is stated '153,000-306,000' volumes. This single volume edition is uncommon, particularly with the Boston imprint.Former owner's inscriptions to the verso of front endpaper, 'Juan Domingo Arrate' Their inscription to the title page also.  Chilean bookbinder's label to the front pastedown, Andres G Stenwall of Valparaiso Chile. 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' is believed to have played a large part in laying the groundwork for the American Civil War. It was the best-selling novel of the nineteenth century after the Bible and is credited with helping the abolitionist cause in the 1850s. Due to the demand for printing this work there were eight power presses running incessantly. A scarce edition of this important work. In a contemporary half morocco binding, with paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart. Rubbing to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Occasional light spots to pages. Very Good
