About This Item

Stowe, Harriet Beecher. Uncle Tom's Cabin; Or Life Among the Lowly. Cleveland: John P. Jewett & Company, 1852. In two volumes. Signed First edition in rare gilt gift binding. This is the second printing of the First edition, marked "Tenth Thousand" on title page. First volume 312 pages, second volume 322 pages. Each measure 5" x 8." Uncle Tom's Cabin was the second best-selling book of the 19th century, only bested by the Bible. These volumes are in green cloth boards with gilt stamping and gilted edges. Gilt still bright and much better than usual for this title. Top and bottom of spine panel professionally repaired. New endpapers. Gift inscription, dated 1852. Comes with small card signed by Stowe herself in 1872: "For For Mr A E Wemple, from Mrs H B Stowe, Mandarin Fla, Feb 2 1872." Book has some wear to corners, light foxing throughout. Gorgeous edition of the abolitionist novel credited as the catalyst for the Civil War by President Lincoln himself. Very good condition.
