About This Item

New York: Farrar Straus Giroux, 2007. Later printing. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. From one of England's most celebrated writers, the author of the award-winning, The History Boys, a funny and superbly observed novella about the Queen of England and the subversive power of reading. When her corgis stray into a mobile library parked near Buckingham Palace, the Queen feels duty-bound to borrow a book. Discovering the joy of reading widely (from J. R. Ackerley, Jean Genet, and Ivy Compton-Burnett to the classics) and intelligently, she finds that her view of the world changes dramatically. Abetted in her newfound obsession by Norman, a young man from the royal kitchens, the Queen comes to question the prescribed order of the world and loses patience with the routines of her role as monarch. Her new passion for reading initially alarms the palace staff and soon leads to surprising and very funny consequences for the country at large. -- from the jacket flap. Book is fine with minor edge wear. The dust jacket, not clipped, is near fine with little edge wear, but there is a pin hole on the front cover.

Synopsis

The Uncommon Reader is none other than HM the Queen who drifts accidentally into reading when her corgis stray into a mobile library parked at Buckingham Palace. She reads widely ( JR Ackerley, Jean Genet, Ivy Compton Burnett and the classics) and intelligently. Her reading naturally changes her world view and her relationship with people like the oleaginous prime minister and his repellent advisers. She comes to question the prescribed order of the world and loses patience with much that she has to do. In short, her reading is subversive. The consequence is, of course, surprising, mildly shocking and very funny.

About Trolls Treasure

Home-based, online sales only. I am running out of space to keep my collection of books, but I cannot bypass any chance offered at searching out some interesting venue offering books. I dithered for quite some time over this problem, and went right on buying books, until it occurred to me that I could make room for new purchases if I started selling some of my books. So, here I am, a small business, but offering personal service. Happy to answer questions.
