First edition/first printing in Very Good+ condition in alike dust-jacket, both showing impression of a line made with a blunt utensil. Nice foxing to fore-edge. Book is beautifully bound in aqua cloth with gilt and blue-stamped lettering and cover design; After the death of his father, John Hersey moves with his mother and sister to a small town in upstate New York. The town is a place that he remembers from when he was a child, and he begins to explore it by walking its streets. One day, he sees a boy being chased by a dog and he intervenes, and the boy thanks him. This encounter leads to a series of other encounters with people in the town, and John begins to learn more about them and their lives. He also begins to understand the town's history and the events that have led to its current state. John's exploration of the town leads to a greater understanding of himself and his relationships with others.; 8vo .
