About This Item

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,2nd reprint.[Originally and first published,1980,this edn is the 2nd reprint of the two reprinted in that same year.] FINE-./VG+.No owner inscrptn and no clip to dw/dj - absence of publisher's price - generally believed an export copy for price to then be printed in local currency at country of destination.Bright, crisp, clean, colour pictorial illustration to dark brown background to front panel of dw/dj - the design representing a Numenorean helmet (karma) and is taken from the original coloured drawing by J. R. R. which he entitled 'Helmet of a captain of the Uinendili, helm made of overlapping plates of metal, the 'fish-crest' of leather embossed and coloured'.[The Uinendili of Numenor are described in Part II,section 2 of this book.] with white and white outlined blue lettering to front and spine, rear panel plain background; with some inevitable but minimal shelf-wear,bumping and creasing; opposing diagonal bottom and head of spine corner tips of rear panel with small closed tears and minimal chipping/rubbing - no other nicks tears or splits present.Top edges coloured salmon-pink with some minimal sporadic faint white spotting,fore-edges with some light toning and minimal sporadic spotting; contents bright, tight and clean,no dog-ear reading creases to any pages corners - but a uniform, accidental fore-edge crease to pp285/94 inclusive. Publisher's bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered,plain burgundy cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt lettered spine/backstrip with immaculate plain white endpapers - rear pastedown with an immaculate folded, pull-out b/w+red illustrated map [The West of Middle-earth at the end of the Third Age.] UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,2nd reprint,2-472pp [paginated] includes an introduction by Christopher Tolkien,Pts One to Four with appropriate notes and appendices and an index; plus [unpaginated] half-title +title pages, contents list/table,and a note distinguishing author and editor in different ways.
A collection of narratives ranging in time from the Elder Days of Middle-earth to the end of the War of the Ring, and comprising such various elements as Gandalf's lively account of how it was that he came to send the Dwarves to the clebrated party at Bag-End,the emergence of the sea-god Ulmo before the eyes of Yuor on the coast of Beleriand, and an exact description of the military organisation of the Riders of Rohan. The book contains the only story that survived from the long ages of Numenor before its downfall, and all that is known of such matters as the Five Wizards, the Palantiri,or the legend of Amroth.
Writing of the Appendices to 'The Lord of the Rings',J. R. R. Tolkien said in 1955: 'Those who enjoy the book as a "heroic romance" only, and find "unexplained vistas" part of the literary effect, will neglect the Appendices, very properly.' 'Unfinished Tales' is avowedly for those who,on the contrary, have not yet sufficiently explored Middle-earth,its languages, its legends, its politics and its kings. The collection has been edited by Christopher Tolkien, who explains in his Introduction the very various treatment these writings have demanded, and who has provided a commentary on each of the 'Tales'. He has redrawn the map accompanying 'The Lord of the Rings' on a larger scale and with the addition of new features and names; and reproduced the only map of Numenor that J. R. R. Tolkien ever made.
