May include a first or last copied page. Brutus Junius Clay (1808-1878), was the brother of emancipationist Cassius Marcellus Clay, but he opposed emancipation. He served in the U. S. House of Representatives from 1863 to 1865. He said he was for preserving the Constitution and the Union, but opposed abolition and the enlistment of slaves in the army, and spoke against the Freedmen's Bureau bill. He also opposed Lincoln in the 1864 presidential campaign and voted against the Thirteenth Amendment..
