First American Edition, from the Third Paris Edition, xxiv, 488pp, preliminary pages foxed, the backstrip is discolored and badly worn at the top and bottom, corners worn through, other extremities moderately worn, Fair, contents G. Translated from the French by Edmund L. Du Barry, M.D. Originally published in Paris in 1843. Sabin 64736. Howes P-519. Much on the early settlement of America, many facets of American life, and a great deal of 17th and 18th century history. POUSSIN was born in France about 1795 and died after 1850. He was a soldier who accompanied General Simon Bernard to the United States after the fall of Napoleon, and became assistant topographical engineer in the United States army, with rank of captain. He was promoted topographical engineer, with rank of major, in 1829, but resigned in 1832. He had become a naturalized citizen of the United States, but returned to France, where he took an active part in the establishment of the republic of 1848, and was its minister to the United States..
