About This Item
London: Richard Phillips, 1802. Twenty five (25) volumes (complete) published from 1802 to 1804, printed by various printers, apparently issued as separate volumes or small sets. Petite set in uniform period bindings of speckled calf leather with red spine label and spine decorated with gilt ruled compartments decorated with three sailing ships and what appears to be an eagle design in the fourth, speckled edges, frontis plate and series title page in each volume in addition to title page for each volume, publisher's ads at the rear of some volumes, books approximately 5.75 inches tall. Folding maps in volume I [2], 3, 5, 11, 13, 14, 19, 23. 24 First map in volume 1 has a closed tear with no paper loss, same with the maps in volume 11 and 23. Series title page in volume IX has a closed tear to the bottom which has been stitched back into place. Otherwise a remarkably well kept set that has been in the same family likely since first published, and which has seen little apparent use. Only light shelfwear, good hinges, firm text blocks, light to moderate foxing to endpapers, frontis engravings and title pages, occasional other light foxing and darkening to some pages and maps, no names or markings other than what appears to possibly a binder's note lightly written inside the front cover of the first volume. . Hard Cover. Very Good. 24mo - 5" - 5¾" Tall.
