London, W. Bent, 1787.. Small section of the Universal Magazine 1787 with 3 pages on early Australia with summary of plans for the convict settlement at Botany Bay, also several mentions of Captain Cook, pages 137-139. Slim 8vo, approximately 220 x 135 mm, 8½ x 5¼ inches, LACKS THE CHART, a very good facsimile has been inserted, pages:113-168 with engraved portrait frontispiece, nicely bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in half calf, gilt lettering and rules to spine, marbled boards with dividing gilt rules, new cream endpapers. Printing on page 137 a little pale, but all text legible, pale age-browning , 2 small neat edge repairs, otherwise a very good copy. With the rubber-stamp of "Henri Vetch, The French Bookstore," Peking. Detailed topographic map of the territory that would become critical in the CBI - China-Burma-India Theater - during WWII. From a historic-cartographic standpoint, the need for accurate maps in executing Allied wartime logistics cannot have been more vital. Approaches to China by land and sea had been cut off by the Japanese. As a result, the burdensome "Hump" had to be surmounted. The E. A. Hulme, Keri: The Bone People. Louisiana State University Press, A tale of New Zealand. Stated United States First Edition, 1985. 450 pages, indexed. WINNER OF THE PEGASUS PRIZE FOR LITERATURE AND THE BOOKER PRIZE. Used. Very Good/Very Good unclipped original $17.95 dust jacket. Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People. Then the book went on to win the prestigious Booker Prize (1985).

Captain Nicolas Baudin's early 19th-century voyage of scientific discovery to Australia is a little-known event in French and Australian history. Yet that voyage played an important part in the history of Australian and Pacific colonization, and in the long story of worldwide scientific exploration. Departing Le Havre in 1800, Baudin's expedition comprised two ships--the Naturaliste and the Géographe--and 238 men, including 22 scientists. For most of the next three-and-a half years they travelled along the western and southern coasts of Australia, charting the coastline and… Read More
