London: Rupert Hart-Davis. Good+ with no dust jacket. 1959. First Edition. Hardcover. Maroon boards with silver-gilt titling to the spine. No dustjacket . (There appear to be 2 bindings for this 1st Edition, but the date details and all inside is IDENTICAL - I know - I have/have had both bindings). On the covers there are traces of old sellotape marks/lines where the library cover once held on to the book in 2 places front and back, o/w, apart from this the covers are clean and bright and unmarked. Internally the book is a Very Clean and VG copy apart from a few traces of labels removed from the front /rear endpapers and Ex-Library (cancelled) stamps on the reverse of the Title page, at the head of Chapter One and the end of the last Chapter. The page fore-edges are lightly foxed/browned (brown spots) . NO other Inscriptions or Marks. The Publishers b/w logo/vignette on Title page. 256 pp. Overall, due to it's Ex-Lib status it is a Good+/VG minus copy of an early Patrick O'Brian First Edition. Classic O'Brian Naval Adventuring and a forerunner for the "Jack Aubrey/Maturin" Series. " This is the second book Patrick O'Brian wrote about the sea and a brilliant sequel to 'The Golden Ocean'. As in The Golden Ocean, 'The Unknown Shore' tells the tale of another ill-fated ship on Anson's expedition round the world - ' The Wager'. The story covers the wrecking of 'The Wager' and the experiences of Jack Byron and Toby......" . Images available on request. ; Ex-Library; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .

Synopsis

The Unknown Shore is a novel published in 1959 by Patrick O'Brian. It is the story of two friends, Jack Byron and Tobias Barrow who sail aboard HMS Wager as part of Anson's 1740 expedition. The midshipman Byron and somewhat unworldly surgeon's mate Barrow are prototypes for Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin who appear in many of O'Brian's later novels.
