1796 FIRST EDITION OF INSECT VOLUME (MAINLY BEETLES) WITH 46 SPECTACULAR HAND COLORED COPPER PLATES BY RENOWNED AUGSBURG ENGRAVER.
6 1/2 x 4 x 1 1/2 inches hardcover, green paper covered boards, green leather spine with red leather gilt title label, ink inscription by previous owner dated 3.4.1921 to front free endpaper, engraved title page depicting cherubs in the countryside collecting and mounting insects on a board. 376 pp, 46 hand-colored copper plates. Covers rubbed, corners bumped, gilt spine bright, scattered foxing and browning of text and plates, but colors are vivid and unmarked. Very good minus. Volume I (offered here) contains beetles, grasshoppers, mantises, cicadas, leafhoppers, aphids.
GOTTLIEB TOBIAS WILHELM (1758 - 1811) was a Protestant pastor and natural history writer, probably best known for his monumental "Unterhaltungen aus der Naturgeschichte" ("Wilhelm's Discourses on Natural History"). This was issued in weekly instalments from his father's publishing house, with illustrations by renowned Augsburg engraver JACOB XAVER SCHMUZER (1713–1775). Overall scope of the work: 25 volumes (with a total of 1469 illustrations), 19 volumes.
