Prague: Aventinum,, 1922. A beautiful copy of apek's uncommon play First edition, first printing, of apek's uncommon satirical play on the theme of longevity. First performed on 21 November 1922 in the Vinohrady Theatre in Prague, the play was later produced in translation at the Arts Theatre in London, under the name The Macropulos Secret, on 8 July 1930. The work also served as the source for Leo Janá ek's penultimate opera, The Makropulos Case; Janá ek saw the play in December 1922 and soon began a correspondence with apek to discuss the adaptation, which premiered at the National Theatre in Brno on 18 December 1926. Octavo. Original patterned paper wrappers, titles to spine in black, edges untrimmed. Housed in a custom green cloth flat-backed box. Wrappers designed by Josef apek. Text in Czech. Spine and cover edges faintly browned, small mark to head of front and rear cover, slight creasing to extremities; a very good, remarkably bright, copy.
