Spine rubbed and faded. 5mm loss of cloth at head and tail of spine. Some foxing. Some short tears along folds of the large folding map. Provenance: Carl R. Staubel, with pencil owner's name "C R Straubel". [Reference: Taylor, "Roll of Book Collectors in New Zealand" p. 33.] ; viii, 251, [1] pages + frontispiece + 7 plates + 3 folding maps (1 in pocket at front). Blind-stamped red cloth boards with gilt lettering and decoration on spine. Page dimensions: 196 x 121mm. The plates include "New Zealand Gold Fields - Gabriel's Gully, Tuapeka, Otago" and "Mr Landsborough (The Australian Explorer) and two Aborigines". Large cloth-backed folding map at rear showing Australia, New Zealand, Auckland, and the Otago Gold Fields. "As I was recommended to take a Long Vacation, and to have a thorough change of air, for the benefit of my health, I determined to make a voyage to the Antipodes, with the intention of returning home through the Pacific and via Panama." - from the Preface. 7 plates facing pages 39, 93, 161, 164, 191, 217, 234. The map facing page iii is "North Western Australia". The map facing page viii is "Terra Australis," "Reduced from the original in Harris's Voyages, for Heywood's Vacation Tour in the Antipodes."
