About This Item
London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1975. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included. London, Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1975 (second edition)/ 1959. Quarto; cloth lightly rubbed; an excellent copy with the dustwrapper a little mottled and slightly creased and torn. 'Dr Yates describes how the tapestries arose out of Catherine de' Medici's marvellous series of festivals at the court of the Valois in the sixteenth century which were intended to bring together hostile religious factions in an attempt at 'politique' conciliation. The festivals were, however, constantly interrupted by renewd outbreaks of the French wars of religion; indeed, the Massacre of Saint Bartholomew began during a festival'.
