About This Item
About this Item: John Day Company, New York, 1934. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Iconic first edition book is VERY GOOD. Book is tight and square and bound in orange cloth over boards. Spine lettering and blind stamp are black. Rare priced (2.50) dust jacket is finely and extensively repaired on the verso. There is a book plate of Allan C. Leverentz, critic and collector of apparently, as a stamp on the FFE states "Books of the Fantastic & Curious from the Collections of Allan C. Leverentz." Many believe this to be the finest novel from the pen of this distinguished German writer, Hanns Heinz Ewers (1871-1943) whose macabre creations, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, The Spider, blood and Alraune, have won for him a world wide audience. Vampire is the strange story of Frank Braun, and how he was cured of a mysterious disease by Lotte, his mistress who loved him more than life. That mysticism for which the author is famous is found in Vampire, as are those other qualities which have caused so many critics to compare his work to that of Baudelaire and Poe. Book is rare and very collectible.
